CBS Religious School Curriculum

Primary
Curriculum in the Primary Grades at Beth Shalom serves as an introduction to everything that is Jewish. Each year has a focus in both Judaic studies and Hebrew. We believe our children should enjoy coming to Religious School and that learning is facilitated when informal stories, games, crafts, cooking, dancing and music are used to enhance their studies.

Ganon
-Pre-kindergarten for children 3 and 4 years old
Ganon students are introduced to the Jewish holidays as they occur throughout the Jewish Calendar. Children learn about the joys of performing mitzvot and giving tzedakah. They also learn the Shema.

Gan
-Kindergarten
Gan students are introduced to the Hebrew Alphabet and simple vocabulary associated with prayers. Children in Gan study Bible Stories and focus on the weekly holiday of Shabbat.

Kitah Aleph & Kitah Bet
-Grades 1 & 2
Using an integrated approach to curriculum, these classes create an environment reminiscent of the Biblical era in their classroom. Bible Stories and the tradition of mitzvot will be studied in this growing and changing atmosphere. Students study artifacts found from Biblical times and make replicas for use in the classroom. In addition, the study of Hebrew letters, beginning prayers and more continues throughout the year.

Intermediate Grades
Beginning at Kitah Gimel - Grade 3 - students at Beth Shalom attend Religious School twice weekly. This enables the students to delve more deeply into the study of prayer and Hebrew. In addition, each year there is a specific focus in Judaic studies that is designed to expand on some of the students' prior learning experiences. Enrichment activities of all kinds help bring learning and understanding closer together. Plays, cooking, music, pen pals, crafts, field trips are possible teaching methods to support learning that will remain with our children over time.

Kitah Gimel
-Grade 3
Kitah Gimel begins the formal introduction to the Hebrew language in concert with their study of Israel. They study many different aspects of Judaism including issues of G-d, Prayer and how Judaism is practiced in other parts of the world.

Kitah Dalet
-Grade 4
Students begin the study of Torah in Kitah Dalet. In conjunction with their understanding of what the Torah is and how it is important in our lives, they also study the Ten Commandments. In Hebrew they learn the prayers that surround the Shema and its Blessings.

Kitah Hay
-Grade 5
In Kitah Hay, students return to the study of Holidays and Life Cycle events. In-depth work helps our students understand the cycle of the Jewish year and life. In Hebrew they begin to deepen their understanding of the Shabbat morning service.

Kitah Vav
-Grade 6
In Kitah Vav, students move beyond the Torah and study the Neviim and Katuvim: Prophets, Kings, Judges and other influential Biblical personalities. To complement this, students study the history of Israel - both ancient and modern. In Hebrew they study the balance of the morning service and learn the music that goes with the prayers.

Kitah Zayin
-Grade 7
As students in Kitah Zayin learn all the final details of the service, they study the Torah portions of the week. They will begin their study of Pirke Avot, a guide to Jewish values.

Midrasha
This program has been developed with our teens in mind!

Following the example of many programs throughout the country, we have elected to give these students their own educational time and environment. Within this frame we are able to offer creative and unique programming.

Each grade has an educational focus: Ethics, Jewish Law and Confirmation. In addition, electives are taught throughout the year. Confirmation Candidates, who meet with the Rabbis throughout the year, take part in the Confirmation Ceremony as part of the Festival of Shavuot.

A special part of the program is a 5 session film study and lunch program held Sunday afternoons throughout the year.

Special Programming and Events
The Beth Shalom Religious School is committed to offering our students the best education we possibly can!

Specialists
Art, Israeli Dance and Music play a big part in our program. Specialists teach in these creative and education enhancing areas.

Family Shabbat
The first Friday of each month is dedicated to our families. During the school year, classes help to present the service, sometimes do a short play on the Parsha, and stories are told. The class also provides the Oneg following the service.

Holiday Events
Each year the Religious School enjoys several outstanding Holiday programs. Our Purim Stroll and Carnival is a very special experience as students wander through the tales and times of Esther. Two other holidays are selected each year for special events which include creative art, dance, music and learning
