Israeli Dancing: Israeli folk dancing has come to life in the last century with the rebirth of the modern State of Israel in 1948, and is a way of celebrating the spirit of the new country. Israeli dance encompasses elements from all over the world, just like the people in the land, including and influenced by dances from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Country Western, modern ballet, salsa, hip hop and more. New dances are created and introduced continually. The movements themselves are quite varied, and most of the dances are associated with a specific piece of music and often its lyrics.
Israeli Dancing in the Sacramento Area is sponsored by the Jewish Federation and led by Michal Kohane. Dance classes are open to anyone who wants to have fun and exercise! We offer Classic and New Dances for group, line and partners. All are welcome, beginner and intermediate.
Nick Righos and Lee Hayashida: On violin, Nick Righos lays down some of the most interesting lines you'll ever hear. Nick has a classical, oldtime and bluegrass fiddle background, and has taken to gypsy jazz like he was born into it. Those high, haunting harmonics and bouncing, rhythmic improvisations have become his signature. Nick is also an accomplished guitar player on both the 6 string and tenor guitars. Nick has held titles such as California's picking and adult fiddle champion, and has judged many contests throughout the West, including the National Oldtime Fiddlers' Contest held annually at Weiser, Idaho.
Rhythm guitar player, Lee Hayashida is as solid as a rock. His chord comp'ing can be as soft and gentle as a French horn or when needed, emulate an entire swing horn section. Lee also enjoys the oldtime/bluegrass sound as well as country swing. He has taken his past experience and combined them to produce a driving rhythm section.
